How to Program a Garage Keypad

Programming your garage door opener keypad is a simple process that allows you to set a four-digit code for easy access to your garage and add an extra layer of security. The keypad is mounted on the wall outside your garage door, enabling you to open and close your garage door conveniently from outside. Your keypad will look different based on the brand and model. Keep the cover closed to protect the buttons from the elements, and never share your code with an outsider.

You might need to add, change or reprogram your PIN when you:

  • Move to a new home.
  • Have a tenant move away.
  • Forget your old code.
  • Suspect someone has learned the code.

Update your code at least twice a year to optimize security.

How Do I Program My LiftMaster Wireless Keypad?

These instructions apply to the LiftMaster universal keypad, compatible with most major brands made since 1993. Before you start, ensure the opener has a functioning light bulb, as light is a programming indicator. Locate the Learn button and consult the manual. Whether you forgot the code, want to enhance security or have an unresponsive keypad, the following steps can help you reprogram your keypad.

For a New Keypad

Follow these steps to create a code for your new keypad:

  1. On the keypad, press and hold the # and * buttons simultaneously until the keypad lights stop flashing.
  2. Enter the 4-digit code and press #.
  3. Press the enter key the number of times corresponding with your garage door opener model. Yellow(1), Purple(2), Orange/red(3) and Green(4).
  4. Watch the light bulb to see if it flashes. If it doesn’t flash, slowly press and release the enter button until the bulb flashes.
  5. Once the light bulb flashes, press 0 to complete programming.
  6. Press the Learn button until the LED light next to it comes on. Press twice if your LiftMaster opener has a MyQ Control Panel. The Learn button enables the opener to recognize the new code.
  7. Enter your 4-digit passcode within 30 seconds and press enter until the opener light blinks or you hear two clicks.
  8. Wait 10-20 seconds and try out your PIN.

To Reprogram a Forgotten PIN

If the keypad is not new but you want to reset it, follow these steps:

  1. Press the Learn button to clear the memory and delete old codes.
  2. Release the button when the light turns off or blinks.
  3. Follow the steps of setting up a new PIN.
  4. Choose a new code that’s easy to remember but difficult for others to guess.
  5. Press 0 to complete programming.

To Change Code

Maybe you gave a delivery guy or a visitor the PIN to access your garage and wish to change it for security purposes. Follow these instructions:

  1. Enter the PIN you wish to change.
  2. Press and hold the # button until the light bulb in the opener flashes twice.
  3. Input the new PIN and press enter. The light should flash once.
  4. Test the new PIN. The door should open and close.
  5. If it doesn’t work, repeat the steps and contact a professional if you encounter further issues.

Troubleshooting Tips

If you input your PIN and it doesn’t work:

  1. Replace the opener’s battery.
  2. Inspect the keypad for frayed or loose wiring.
  3. Clean the keypad if the keys appear to be stuck.
  4. Reprogram using the steps above.
  5. Turn the opener off for about five minutes, then turn it on and try again.
